Counselling and Therapy

Depression and Mental Health

Depression affects approximately one in four people at some stage in their lives. People of all ages, backgrounds, lifestyles and nationalities can experience depression.

Symptoms can vary from feeling of sadness, irritability, worthlessness or hopelessness, to changes in patterns of sleep, eating daily routine etc. Suicidal thoughts or feelings of helplessness can also occur. When the symptoms are severe, medical help should be sought.

There are many treatments for depression from prescription medication or complementary therapies to talking therapies. Often a combination of these is effective. Different things can work at different times and for different people.

Talking therapies can help to identify things that individuals can do to manage the symptoms or prevent recurrent episodes. Focussing on positive achievements can be a useful first step to recovery. Each person's journey through depression is unique and therefore the help that supports them will also need to be tailored to them. Counselling is one way that may be useful. The counsellor will work with an individual to work out a way forward.

Other mental health issues such as anxiety, eating disorders, compulsive behaviour can also benefit from talking therapy.
